No. 20 Women's Soccer Overcomes Deficit in Win Over Grand View

Marshall, Mo., (Oct. 12, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College soccer teams hosted Grand View (Iowa) in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.  The No. 20 women's team overcame an early deficit to earn a 3-1 win.  The No. 7 men's team played Grand View to a 1-1 tie.

The women's game started with early chances created by Missouri Valley as both Junior Midfielder Carla Carmona (Barcelona, Spain) and Senior Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.) had shots saved with less than five minutes played in the contest.  The Vikings created four corner kick opportunities through the 11-minute mark.  Grand View took advantage of its first chance five minutes later, as a breakaway led to the opening goal of the contest, putting MVC in a 1-0 deficit.  The two teams traded possession over the next stretch of play, as the game went under 15-minutes remaining in the half.  Missouri Valley held possession inside the GVU box, and a foul committed by the defense resulted in a penalty kick.  Carmona stepped up, and put the attempt past the keeper to tie the teams at 1-1.  One more quality chance was created by MVC just before halftime, but the header from Carmona was saved, and the score stayed tied at the break.

Play in the second half featured a quick chance on goal for Missouri Valley, less than two minutes after the restart, as the shot from Freshman Defender Lucia Torres Vizcaino (Malaga, Spain) was saved.  Grand View was kept from creating any chances on goal through the entire half.  Missouri Valley put a pair of shots on goal near the 67-minute mark, but the attempts from Freshman Midfielder Fabiana Vasquez (Isla Margarita, Venezuela) and Junior Forward Marlene Flores (Bolivia) were both saved.  With just under 19-minutes remaining in the contest, Junior Forward Silvia Maldonado (Madrid, Spain) sent a shot from outside the Grand View box towards goal, which hit off the crossbar.  Flores collected the rebound, and put a close shot into the net that moved MVC in front, 2-1.  Less than two minutes later, Flores collected a pass from Senior Forward Miriam Aldabo Alguero (Mequinenza, Spain) at the top of the box, and put a shot just inside the far post to extend the advantage to 3-1.  Missouri Valley closed out the game from there, and earned the 3-1 victory.

Flores scored two goals, and added the first game-winning goal of the season.  Flores now has seven goals and 18 points.  Carmona added the second goal of the season.  Aldabo Alguero now has four assists and Maldonado has two assists.  Grand View was limited to only one shot in the contest, while Missouri Valley created 24 shots and 15 corner kicks.

The win moves Missouri Valley to 10-3-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the Heart.  Grand View falls to 1-7-2 on the season and 0-6-1 in the conference.

Up next, the men's team hosts Bellevue (Neb.) in a non-conference game, Wednesday at 7 p.m., inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.  Both teams will be in action Oct. 19, hosting Park (Mo.) in a Heart doubleheader.  Women's game at 1 p.m., and the men's game to follow at 3:30 p.m.
