Women's Basketball Builds Big Lead in Win at Baker

Baldwin City, Kan. (Feb. 16, 2026)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's basketball teams traveled to Baldwin City, Kan., Monday evening, for a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader against Baker (Kan.).  The Viking women's team built up a big lead in the first half, and finished out a 71-46 victory.  The men's team held off the Wildcats late for a 64-61 win.

Missouri Valley took control of the women's game early in the first quarter.  Sophomore Forward Lexi Fenstermacher (O'Fallon, Mo.) put in the opening field goal for MVC, on a three-point attempt, with just over two minutes played.  Senior Center Sara Ortiz (La Roda, Spain) followed with a layup, and Fenstermacher added another basket over the next minutes of play to put the advantage at 7-2.  Freshman Guard Madison Mills (Farmington, Mo.) sank a three-pointer and Ortiz finished off another layup near the four-minute mark.  Baker was limited to only two points scored in the entire quarter, as Missouri Valley forced seven turnovers to begin the game.  The Vikings went into the second quarter in front, 12-2.

The lead grew quickly after the start of the second quarter, as Junior Guard Jessica Reeter (Chillicothe, Mo.) made a three-point shot.  Fenstermacher came through with a layup just over one minute later, and Junior Guard Jozelynn Bostick (Centralia, Mo.) added a three-pointer to make it a 20-4 score with nearly three minutes off the clock.  Bostick sank another three-point basket, Ortiz made a layup, off a steal from Senior Guard Sophie Sullivan (Lombard, Ill.), and Sullivan put in a three-pointer to stretch the advantage out to 28-6 near the midway point of the quarter.  The two teams traded points over the next several minutes.  Reeter made a jumper, Sullivan added two free throws, and Freshman Forward Tara Rivas (San Salvador, El Salvador) put in a layup through the one-minute mark.  Reeter capped scoring in the half for MVC with a three-pointer, and Missouri Valley took a 37-14 lead into halftime.

The Vikings built on their advantage after play resumed following halftime.  Reeter scored 10 points, and Freshman Guard Bianca Sarbu (Bucharest, Romania) added the five points late in the quarter, as Missouri Valley outscored BU by a 19-11 margin.  Bostick and Sullivan each added two points apiece in the quarter to help put the score at 56-25 going into the final quarter of play.  The Wildcats were unable to work back late in the game, as Missouri Valley used four points from Bostick and four points by Reeter to help finish out a 71-46 victory.

Reeter led with 22 points and added five rebounds and four assists.  Bostick had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Ortiz led with 13 rebounds to go with eight points.  Missouri Valley forced 17 turnovers in the game, held a 52-35 advantage in rebounds and limited Baker to only 27-percent shooting from the floor.

Missouri Valley improves to 15-11 overall and 12-7 in the Heart with the win.  Baker drops to 3-22 on the season and 1-17 in the conference.  The Vikings defeated the Wildcats in the previous meeting this season, 70-60, back on Nov. 22.

Up next, the Viking basketball teams will close the regular season with a Senior Day doubleheader, at home, against William Penn (Iowa), Saturday afternoon inside the Burns Athletic Complex.  Women's game starts at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at 4 p.m.
