Softball Drops Pair of Games at St. Mary

Leavenworth, Kan., (March 16, 2025)- The Missouri Valley College softball team traveled to Leavenworth, Kan., for a non-conference doubleheader against St. Mary (Kan.), Sunday afternoon.  The Vikings dropped both games of the doubleheader.

St. Mary took an early lead in the first game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and added one more run in the bottom of the second.  After a scoreless third inning, the Spires added another two runs in the fourth.  Junior Catcher Makayla Casjens (Galt, Calif.) singled with one out in the top of the fifth, but the at-bat ended on a double-play.  Junior Centerfielder Jesykah Foster (Garden City, Kan.) then led off the sixth inning with a single, and Freshman Second Baseman Allison Loucas (Twin Lakes, Wisc.) reached on an error, but the two were left stranded.  Missouri Valley was unable to rally late in the game, and fell, 5-0.

Casjens had two hits, while Loucas, Senior Shortstop Brittney Slocum (Clovis, Calif.) and Foster each had one hit.  Sophomore Pitcher Chloe Shuff (Cypress, Calif.) picked up the loss, going three innings with five hits, four earned runs and one strikeout.

The second game started with a pair of singles from Loucas and Junior Shortstop Aniah Castruita (South El Monte, Calif.), but a double-play ended the threat.  St. Mary followed with two runs scored in the bottom half of the inning to move in front, 2-0.  Junior Pitcher Kyleigh Villarreal (Fenton, Mo.) kept USM scoreless the second and third innings to keep the Vikings at a two-run deficit.  Both Junior First Baseman Olivia Bettencourt (Murrieta, Calif.) and Sophomore Catcher Quinlynn Keller (Galt, Calif.) reached safely in the top of the fourth, and moved into scoring position, but both were left on-base.  St. Mary added to its advantage in the bottom of the fourth, rallying with two outs by producing four runs on two hits and one error to make it a 6-0 score.  The Vikings were unable to put another runner in scoring position in the final two innings, and fell, 6-0.

Loucas and Castruita each had two hits, while Bettencourt, Keller and Freshman Third Baseman Jordan Pasbrig (Moberly, Mo.) had one hit.  Villarreal picked up the loss, going 3.2 innings with three hits, five earned runs and two strikeouts.

The pair of losses drop Missouri Valley to 6-14 overall, while St. Mary improves to 12-10.

Up next, the Viking softball team hosts Stephens (Mo.) in a non-conference doubleheader, Monday at 3 p.m., at Lyon Bowl.
