No. 5 Men's Volleyball Suffers Loss at Morningside

Sioux City, Iowa, (March 21, 2026)- The Missouri Valley College men's volleyball team traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, for a Saturday afternoon Heart of America Athletic Conference match with Morningside (Iowa).  The Vikings fell behind early, and dropped the match by scores of 18-25, 22-25, 16-25, 23-25.

Game one started with Morningside jumping out to an 8-1 lead.  The Viking deficit grew over the next stretch out play, out to a 16-6 score.  Missouri Valley worked back into the game, taking six of the next seven points.  Senior Opposite Luca Hasse (Paderborn, Germany) had three kills and Sophomore Setter Leonardo Goncalves (Ribierao Preto, Brazil) added an ace during the run to help work the team back to a 17-12 deficit. However the two teams traded points over the rest of the game, and the Mustangs finished with a 25-18 win.

Missouri Valley went in front early in the second game, using one kill from both Junior Outside Hitter Andrey Bastos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Hasse, to go with a block from Junior Outside Hitter Pierro Porras (Lima, Peru) and Junior Middle Blocker Joao Tavers (Parana, Brazil) to sit with a 5-1 advantage.  Morningside chipped away at its deficit, and eventually tied the teams at 8-8.  The Vikings used a kill from Hasse, who also teamed up with Sophomore Middle Blocker Martin Tseyera (Salta, Argentina) on a block to go ahead, 11-9.  The Mustangs came back to win five of the next six points, and grab a 14-12 lead.  Morningside maintained its advantage until a kill from Hasse tied the teams at 19-19.  Missouri Valley was unable to go back in front late, and Morningside pulled away for a 25-22 to win the game.

Needing a win in the third game to extend the match, the Vikings traded points with MC through a 7-7 score.  Two kills from Freshman Outside Hitter Loan Fargier, who also teamed up with Tavares on a block, and one kill by Bastos pushed MVC on top, 12-8.  The Vikings gradually added to their lead through the rest of the game.  Bastos put down back-to-back kills to make it 16-11, while two-straight kills from Freshman Outside Hitter Bart Mulder (Hoogeveen, Netherlands) put the score at 20-12.  One late kill by Bastos, Hasse and Tavares gave the Vikings game-point, and an ace by Hasse ended a 25-16 win for Missouri Valley, and made it a 2-1 match in games.

After the two teams traded points early in game four, Missouri Valley won five-straight points, helped by one kill from both Tavares and Mulder, to go with an ace from Fargier, as the team took an 8-5 lead.  Morningside worked back, and won five of the next six points to claim a 10-9 advantage.  The two teams traded points through a 14-14 score, but the Mustangs began to pull away late.  Missouri Valley eventually sat in a 21-17 deficit late in the game.  An ace from Goncalves, and one kill by Bastos helped during a four-point run to tie the teams at 21-21.  A Hasse kill made it a 23-23 score, but Morningside won the final two points to take the game, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

Hasse led with 17 kills on a .419 hitting percentage.  Bastos had a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs, while Tavares added 10 kills.  Goncalves led with 32 assists and had eight digs, while Freshman Setter Leonardo Poiatti (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 16 assists.  Missouri Valley totaled seven blocks and five aces as a team.

The loss drops Missouri Valley to 15-4 overall and 9-4 in the Heart.  Morningside improves to 19-9 on the season and 7-8 in the conference.

Up next, the Viking men's volleyball team will host Health Sciences & Pharmacy (Mo.), Tuesday at 7 p.m., inside the Burns Athletic Complex.  Missouri Valley swept UHSP on the road, back on March 3.
