No. 5 Men's Volleyball Tops Indiana Tech With Sweep

Grand Rapids, Mich., (Jan. 24, 2026)- The No. 5 Missouri Valley College men's volleyball team continued play in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a neutral site match against Indiana Tech.  The Vikings swept their way to victory in the contest by scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-15.

 

Game one began with Indiana Tech taking the first three points to grab an early lead.  Missouri Valley worked back with three-straight points, helped by an ace from Freshman Outside Hitter Loan Fargier and a block by Junior Middle Blocker Joao Tavares (Parana, Brazil) to tie the teams at 5-5.  Another three-point run for MVC followed, featuring one kill from Senior Middle Blocker Arthur Martenelli (Curitiba, Brazil) to send the team in front, 8-6.  Missouri Valley won four of five points in a stretch of play, as Junior Outside Hitter Andrey Bastos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Senior Opposite Luca Hasse (Paderborn, Germany) and Martenelli each landed one kill to stretch the advantage out to 12-7.  The Vikings continued to increase their lead, as Hasse put down one kill and Bastos added both a kill and two aces to make it a 16-8 score.  Indiana Tech began to chip away at its deficit, and eventually made it a 20-16 game.  Freshman Outside Hitter Bart Mulder (Hoogeveen, Netherlands) responded with two kills, then added two aces to send Missouri Valley to game-point.  One final error from Indiana Tech ended the first game, 25-16, in favor of the Vikings.

 

Missouri Valley went in front at the start of the second game, as Hasse had two kills and put down an ace to send the team ahead, 4-2.  The Vikings won four of five points using one kill apiece by Bastos, Sophomore Setter Leonardo Goncalves (Ribierao Preto, Brazil) and Hasse to make it an 8-5 score.  Indiana Tech stayed close, and trailed, 12-10, midway through the game.  Missouri Valley responded with a four-point run, which included a block from Tavares and an ace by Hasse as the lead grew to 16-10.  Back-to-back kills from Tavares and Bastos made it a 19-13 score, but Indiana Tech won three-straight to trim the gap down to 19-16.  The Vikings held off Indiana Tech from there, as Martenelli landed two kills, while both Freshman Setter Leonardo De Gouveia (Sao Jose Dos Campos, Brazil) and Fargier each added one kill to send the team to game-point.  Hasse ended the game with one more kill, as MVC won, 25-20, and moved to a 2-0 lead in the match.  The Vikings hit at a .444 percentage in the game.

 

Looking for the sweep in game three, Missouri Valley won five of the opening six points.  Fargier and Martenelli teamed up on a block to start the game.  Hasse and Fargier each added one kill in the early run, and MVC went in front, 5-1.  Indiana Tech worked back to a 6-5 deficit, but the Vikings followed by winning four of the next five points.  Bastos put down two kills, Hasse added one kill, and Tavares earned an ace to make it a 10-6 score.  Missouri Valley took control of the game several points later on a five-point run.  Fargier started the stretch with a kill, and Bastos landed an ace.  The next three points all came from Indiana Tech errors, and the lead sat at 15-7.  The two teams traded points through the rest of the game.  One ace each came from Hasse and Fargier, while Martenelli, Bastos and Tavares each added one kill to eventually send the contest to match-point.  The win was sealed on a final ace from Bastos, and the Vikings took game three, 25-15, to sweep the match.  Indiana Tech was limited to a -.050 hitting percentage in the game.

 

Hasse led with 11 kills and added five digs and three aces.  Bastos had nine kills and four aces.  Goncalves finished with a team-high 24 assists.  Missouri Valley totaled three blocks and 12 aces as a team, while hitting at a .347 percentage in the match.  

 

Missouri Valley improves to 2-0 on the season, while Indiana Tech falls to 1-1.

 

Up next, the Viking men's volleyball team will play for the first time at home, and open the Missouri Valley Invitational with a Thursday contest against Ottawa (Ariz.), Thursday at 7 p.m.  The Invitational continues with matches throughout the day Friday and Saturday inside the Burns Athletic Complex.
