Women's Wrestling Produces Two Champions at Heart Championship

Oskaloosa, Iowa, (March 1, 2025)-The No. 8 Missouri Valley College women's wrestling team competed at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Saturday.  The Vikings produced four finalists, two individual conference champions, nine automatic national qualifiers, and a third place finish.

 

No. 3 Freshman Xochitl Mota-Pettis (Humble, Texas)-131 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Corinne McClure of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a first period (2:18) pin.

Semifinal: Defeated teammate No. 10 Ashley Whetzal in a 13-0 technical fall.

Championship Match: Defeated Jumoke Adekoye of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a first period (2:23) pin.

Mota-Pettis is the 131lb conference champion, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 5 Senior Kelani Corbett (Wahiawa, Hawaii)-180 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Savanna Rickter of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 18 Nevaeh Wardlow of Baker (Kan.) in an 11-0 technical fall.

Championship Match: Defeated America Lopez of William Penn (Iowa) in a 12-2 technical fall.

Corbett is the 180lb conference champion, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship

 

No. 11 Junior Jasmina Immaeva (Uzbekistan)-124 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Mikayla Jardine of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 12-0 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Allison Hynes of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a second period (3:40) pin.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 2 Maya Davis of Grand View (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Championship Match: Lost to Joanna Vanderwood in a 4-3 decision.

Immaeva placed second at 124 pounds, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 11 Sophomore Serenity De La Garza (McAllen, Texas)-138 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Audrey Darnell of Baker (Kan.) in a first period (2:06) pin.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 13 Lilly Gough of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a first period (0:54) pin.

Championship Match: Lost to Kendall Bostelman of William Penn (Iowa) in a 10-5 decision.

De La Garza placed second at 138 pounds, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 18 Freshman Sarah Pineda (Perris, Calif.)-110 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated No. 10 Jenna Gerhardt of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a second period (4:59) pin.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 5 Lita Cruz of Grand View (Iowa) in a 12-2 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Kylee Slyter of Baker (Kan.) in a first period (2:40) pin.

Third Place Match: Defeated Jenna Gerhardt of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a first period (2:54) pin.

Pineda placed third at 110 pounds, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 10 Senior Ashley Whetzal (Virginia Beach, Va.)-131 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Teani Mederios-Maielua of William Woods (Mo.) in a first period (1:20) pin.

Semifinal: Lost to teammate No. 3 Xochitl Mota-Pettis in a 13-0 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Berlin Kiddoo of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 13-2 technical fall.

Third Place Match: Defeated Devin Patton of William Penn (Iowa) in a second period (4:16) pin.

Whetzal placed third at 131 pounds, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 19 Senior Aniseta Acosta (Sacramento, Calif.)-145 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated No. 20 Mina Himmel of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a first period (1:23) pin.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 5 Esther Kolawole of William Penn (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Hailee Crosland of Baker (Kan.) in a 12-0 technical fall.

Third Place Match: Defeated teammate No. 10 Sevreign Aumua in a second period (5:45) pin.

Acosta placed third at 145 pounds, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 10 Sevreign Aumua (Grain Valley, Mo.)-145 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Naida Abdijanovic of William Penn (Iowa) in a first period (2:18) pin.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 5 Krista Warren of Grand View (Iowa) in a 12-10 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Mina Himmel of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a first period (1:39) pin.

Third Place Match: Lost to teammate No. 19 Acosta in a second period (5:45) pin.

Aumua placed fourth at 145 pounds, and will await a possible at-large berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 9 Senior Hailey Holland (San Bernardino, Calif.)-110 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Kylee Slyter of Baker (Kan.) in a 6-1 decision.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 7 Tristan Nitta of Grand View (Iowa) in a first period (2:29) pin.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Jenna Gerhardt of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 7-0 decision.

Fifth Place Match: Defeated Kylee Slyter of Baker (Kan.) in a 12-2 technical fall.

Holland placed fifth at 110 pounds, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

Junior Zoey Smalley (Winston, Ore.)-180 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Hayla Hoffman of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a first period (1:36) pin.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 8 America Lopez of William Penn (Iowa) in an 11-0 technical fall.

Consolation Second Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated No. 19 Shainne Whited of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Neveah Wardlow of Baker (Kan.) in a 10-4 decision.

Fifth Place Match: Defeated Grace Timmons of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a first period (2:42) pin.

Smalley placed fifth at 180 pounds, and earned an automatic qualifying berth into the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship.

 

Junior Autumn Perez (Dodge City, Kan.)-160 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 12 Alexa Wolf of William Penn (Iowa) in an 11-1 technical fall.

Consolation Second Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Third Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Semifinal:  Lost to Liz Cope of Baker (Kan.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Fifth Place Match: Lost to Emma Cole of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a first period (1:25) pin.

Perez placed sixth at 160 pounds.

 

Freshman Isla Baeza (Orem, Utah)-124 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 10 Catie Campbell of Grand View (Iowa) in a second period (3:53) pin.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Mikayla Jardine of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Consolation Third Round: Lost to No. 18 Catherine Steinkamp of William Penn (Iowa) in a 10-0 technical fall.

 

Missouri Valley finished third in the team standings with 169 points.  No. 1 Grand View (Iowa) was first overall with 192 points, followed by No. 6 William Penn (Iowa) in third with 173 points.

 

Possible at-large selections for the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship will be announced by the NAIA, Tuesday.  Seeding and the preliminary bracket for the National tournament will be released Friday.  The 2025 NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship takes place March 14-15 in Park City, Kan.
