No. 8 Women's Wrestling Produces Three Champions at Midland Warrior Open

Fremont, Neb., (Feb. 8, 2025)- The No. 8 Missouri Valley College women's wrestling team competed at Midland (Neb.) Warrior Open, Saturday. The Vikings competed against programs for multiple collegiate divisions. Leading the team was Freshman Xochitl Mota-Pettis who won at 131 pounds, and Junior Zoey Smalley and Senior Elizabeth Hubbard tied for first place at 180 pounds.

No. 3 Freshman Xochitl Mota-Pettis-131 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Caxton Smyth of Northwest Kansas Tech in a 10-0 technical fall.

Second Round: Defeated Brianna Gaytan of Midland (Neb.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Mackenzie Armagost of Sioux Falls (S.D.) in a first period (1:37) pin.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 17 Bryce White of Oklahoma City in a 10-0 technical fall.

First Place Match: Defeated Piper Cadden of Fort Hays (Kan.) in a 14-2 technical fall.

Mota-Pettis won at 131 pounds.

Junior Zoey Smalley (Winston, Ore.)-180 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Maeli Howard of Snow (Utah) in a first period (2:05) pin.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Yazmin Belk of Doane (Neb.) in a second period (5:18) pin.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 14 Bailee Nelson of Friends (Kan.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

First Place Match: Finished by mutual forfeit against teammate Elizabeth Hubbard.

Smalley tied for first place with teammate Hubbard at 180 pounds.

Senior Elizabeth Hubbard (Azle, Texas)-180 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Aileen Rueda of Doane (Neb.) in a first period (1:25) pin.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Rose Latta of Kansas State in an 8-0 decision.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 12 Marissa Patterson of Hastings (Neb.) in a first period (1:03) pin.

First Place Match: Finished by mutual forfeit against teammate Smalley.

Hubbard tied for first place with teammate Smalley at 180 pounds.

No. 17 Freshman Sarah Pineda (Perris, Calif.)-110 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Paw Hobza of Sioux Falls (S.D.) in a 10-0 technical fall.

Semifinal: Lost to Somally Sek of Iowa Western CC in a 21-13 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Rachel Jones of Snow (Utah) in a first period (1:46) pin.

Third Place Match: Defeated Bailee Cahs of Iowa Western CC in a second period (3:42) pin.

Pineda placed third at 110 pounds.

Senior Aniseta Acosta (Sacramento, Calif.)-145 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Aubrey Sharbono of Hastings (Neb.) in a 12-1 technical fall.

Second Round: Defeated Anisa Moreno of Friends (Kan.) in a first period (2:23) pin.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 8 Sofia Delgado of Grand View (Iowa) in a first period (1:34) pin.

Consolation Fourth Round: Lost to Unattached Ariana Mercado in a first period (1:12) pin.

Junior Autumn Perez (Dodge City, Kan.)-160 pounds:

First Round: Defeated No. 20 Brook Schilke of Hastings (Neb.) in a second period (5:51) pin.

Second Round: Defeated Alexa Etheridge of Friends (Kan.) in a first period (1:18) pin.

Quarterfinal: Lost to Emmalee Spurgeon of Grand View (Iowa) in a second period (3:49) pin.

Consolation Fourth Round: Lost to Ayana Fletcher of Iowa Western CC in a first period (2:46) pin.
