Women's Volleyball Sweeps Avila on the Road

Kansas City, Mo., (Sept. 19, 2025)- The Missouri Valley College women's volleyball traveled to Kansas City, Mo., for a non-conference match against Avila (Mo.), Friday.  The Vikings took control early and swept to a victory by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-12.

 

The first game started with Missouri Valley moving in front early, taking eight of the first nine points.  Sophomore Setter Kellen Fitzgerald (Frisco, Texas) landed two aces, Senior Middle Hitter Kinga Romanowicz (Krepiec, Poland) had two kills and also teamed up with Sophomore Outside Hitter Olivia Randolph (Columbia, Mo.) on a block, along with three AU errors, making it an 8-1 score.  Avila cut their deficit down in the next stretch of play as they won six of the next eight points, 10-7.   The Vikings answered back as both Senior Setter Avery Crain (Shell Knob, Mo.) and Freshman Outside Hitter Rylee Adams (Odessa, Mo.) had an ace each and Junior Outside Hitter Laura Tavares (Merida, Venezuela) put down a kill to stretch the lead out to 17-9.  The two teams traded possession over the next stretch of play, as Senior Outside Hitter Juliana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Tavares, Fitzgerald, Romanowicz and Adams had a kill each to make it a 23-14 score.  Missouri Valley used an AU error and final kill from Oliveira to win the first game, 25-17.

Play in the second game started with both teams trading points through a 6-6 score.  Then, the Vikings eventually took the lead as they won three-straight points as Junior Middle Hitter Stacy Maimur (Chicago, Ill.) had a kill and Freshman Libero Emily Elias (Fulton, Mo.) landed back-to-back aces to put MVC ahead, 9-6.  Missouri Valley stayed in front, using a kill each from Oliveira, Randolph, Maimur and Adams, along with three Avila errors to hold a 17-14 advantage.  The Vikings won seven of the next nine points to build a 24-18 lead, with two kills from Randolph, followed by a kill each from Adams and Maimur, and an ace from Libero Morgan Smith (Kaufman, Texas).  The final point went to Missouri Valley, as Randolph put down a kill to end the second game, 25-21.

Going for the sweep in the third game, the Vikings took control early as Adams had two kills, Oliveira landed back-to-back aces and Senior Right Side Maria Bertholdo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Romanowicz teamed up on a block to make it a 7-3 score.  Missouri Valley continued to pull away as they won six-straight points holding a 13-4 lead.  Oliveira and Maimur teamed up on two blocks, and Adams and Tavares each had a kill.  MVC stretched their advantage, as Oliveira recorded two kills, followed by an ace from Senior Libero Ana Franco (Cascais, Portugal) and a kill from Tavares, 19-9.  The Vikings won six of the final eight points, which included a kill and an ace from Oliveira, a kill each from Bertholdo, Adamds and Romanowicz, and an Avila error ended the game, 25-12, and Missouri Valley swept the match.

Adams led with ten kills and seven digs, while Oliveira finished with six kills and four aces. Tavares also had six kills, and both Romanowicz and Randolph totaled five kills each. Fitzgerald led with 21 assists and two aces. Missouri Valley finished with six blocks as a team.

 

The win moves Missouri Valley to 6-8 overall, while Avila drops to 5-11 on the season.

Up next, the Vikings women's volleyball team will travel to Lamoni, Iowa, for a Heart of America match with Graceland (Iowa), Saturday at 2 p.m.
