Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 21 Central Methodist on the Road
Fayette, Mo., (Oct. 22, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College women's volleyball team traveled to Fayette, Mo., for a Heart of America Athletic Conference match with No. 21 Central Methodist (Mo.). The Vikings fell in three games by scores of 20-25, 6-25, 13-25.
The first game started with Central Methodist winning the opening three points, but Missouri Valley used a block from Senior Middle Hitter Emma Schulte (Marshall, Mo.) and Junior Middle Hitter Patrysia Uzoma (Moscow, Russia), three CMU errors and a kill from Junior Middle Hitter Kinga Ramonowicz to tie the game at 5-5. The Vikings took the lead winning five-straight points with a kill each from Ramonowicz and Freshman Right Side Harper Herring (Jacksonville, Fla.), and an ace from Senior Setter Mencia Medio (Gijon, Spain) to make it a 10-7 score. Both teams traded points over the next stretch of play through a 14-14 score, featuring two kills from Junior Outside Hitter Blanca Arciniega Palma (El Paso, Texas). The Eagles eventually went ahead taking the next five points to hold a 19-14 advantage. Two kills from Senior Outside Hitter Ksenija Simun (Kotor, Montenegro) and an ace from Junior Defensive Specialist Avery Crain (Shell Knob, Mo.) cut down its deficit to 20-18, however Central Methodist won the four of the last five points to take the opening game, 25-20.
The second game started with the Eagles going in front early, 9-3. Central Methodist continued to pull away from there, and MVC trailed, 16-4. Missouri Valley was unable to work back, and CMU finished off the second game, 25-6.
Needing a win in the third game to extend the match, the Vikings fell into an early deficit as the Eagles held a 7-2 lead. Sophomore Outside Hitter Danica Velickovic (Pozarevac, Serbia) landed an ace and Senior Middle Hitter Alanah Best (Lima, Ohio) and Senior Outside Hitter Angelique Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) teamed up on a block to cut its deficit, 8-5. Central Methodist took control of the game from there, and eventually led, 16-8. Missouri Valley was unable to climb into the game, as CMU won the final game, 25-13, to sweep the match.
Arciniega led with five kills and seven digs, while Wright and Avery followed with three kills each. Sophomore Setter Paige Siebert (St. Louis, Mo.) had eight assists and five digs, and Medio finished with seven assists and eight digs. Missouri Valley had a total of three blocks and three aces.
Missouri Valley falls to 14-11 overall and 6-6 in the Heart. Central Methodist improves to 21-5 on the season and 10-2 in the conference.
