Women's Volleyball Sweeps to Victory at Home Over Mission

Marshall, Mo., (Sept. 3, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College women's volleyball team hosted Mission (Mo.), Tuesday evening inside the Burns Athletic Complex in a non-conference match.  The Vikings swept to a win by scores of 25-13, 25-10, 25-15.

 

The match opened with the teams trading points as two kills from Junior Setter Ana Santos (Curitiba, Brazil) and one kill from Junior Middle Hitter Kinga Ramonowicz (Krepiec, Poland) put Missouri Valley in front, 4-3.  The Vikings gradually added to their lead over the next stretch of play, as Senior Outside Hitter Ana Oro (Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Senior Outside Hitter Ksenija Simun (Kotor, Montenegro) made it a 10-6 score.  Three-straight points, featuring two kills from Oro and one ace from Junior Defensive Specialist Ana Franco (Cascais, Portugal) extended the advantage to 13-7.  The two teams traded points over the next stretch of play as Mission trimmed its deficit down to 17-13.  Missouri Valley took control of the game from there, winning the final eight points.  Ramonowicz started the run with back-to-back kills, followed by one kill each from Oro and Simun.  Senior Libero Momoko Yokoyama (Tokyo, Japan) added two-straight aces and two final Mission errors allowed the Vikings to earn a 25-13 win.

 

Missouri Valley built up an early lead in the second game, as Senior Middle Hitter Emma Schulte (Marshall, Mo.) and Santos teamed up on a block, while Schulte put down one kill to help the team to sit on top, 5-0.  Six-straight points later in the game, helped by two kills from Oro and two aces from Santos pushed the advantage out to 11-2.  The lead grew to double-digits after Oro put down a kill and an ace, and Senior Middle Hitter Brooke Wright (Mansfield, Ark.) added a kill, as the score sat at 14-3.  Missouri Valley continued to pull away as Oro had two kills, Simun landed one kill and Junior Outside Hitter Blanca Palma (El Paso, Texas) finished off one kill to make it a 23-6 score.  Two final kills from Oro sealed a 25-10 win for MVC, and moved the team one game away from a sweep.  Missouri Valley hit at a match-high .409 percentage in the game, and held Mission to a -.115 percentage.

 

The third game started with the Vikings again going in front early.  Ramonowicz, Oro and Wright each landed one kill, while Sophomore Setter Paige Siebert (St. Louis, Mo.) added an ace through an 8-2 score.  Five-straight points eventually pushed the MVC lead to double-digits, at 13-3, after one kill from Simun and one kill and a solo block from Freshman Right Side Harper Herring (Jacksonville, Fla.).  Mission began to chip away at its deficit, and got to within an 18-14 score later in the game.  The Vikings answered with five-straight points, including three kills from Herring.  Wright brought the team to match-point with a kill, and another kill from Herring gave MissourI Valley a 25-15 win in the game, and a sweep in the match.

 

Oro led with 12 kills, on a .385 hitting percentage, to go with seven digs.  Herring had six kills, and a .625 hitting percentage.  Santos led with 24 assists.  Missouri Valley hit at a .326 percentage in the match, and limited Mission to a -.043 percentage.  The Vikings totaled five blocks and 10 aces as a team.

 

Missouri Valley improves to 8-3 on the season, while Mission drops to 0-10.

 

Up next, the Viking women's volleyball team plays two matches at the Ottawa (Kan.) Invite in Ottawa, Kan., Sept. 13.  Missouri Valley plays Oklahoma Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m., followed by a match with St. Mary (Kan.) at 6:30 p.m.
