Marshall, Mo., (Nov. 22, 2025)- The No. 6 seed Missouri Valley College women's soccer team hosted a second round game in the 2025 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship against Spring Arbor (Mich.), Saturday afternoon. The game went into overtime, and the Vikings scored early in the extra period to earn a 2-1 win and advance into the third round.
Missouri Valley held the better of possession through much of play in the first half. The opening shot on goal came with nearly six minutes off the clock, as the attempt from Senior Forward Marlene Flores (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) was saved. The Vikings created a total of four corner kick opportunities through the first 13-minutes of play. The fourth corner kick led to a header from Senior Defender Marta Carrasco Mesa (Sevilla, Spain), which was also saved. Missouri Valley built up more pressure near the 20-minute mark, and Senior Forward Silvia Maldonado (Madrid, Spain) put a shot on goal, but the attempt was saved to keep the contest scoreless. Both teams struggled to create chances through the rest of the half, until MVC had one more attempt on goal in the closing moments. The shot from Carrasco Mesa was saved once again just before the half ended, and the teams went into the break tied at 0-0.
The second half started with an early shot on goal for Missouri Valley, but another attempt from Flores was saved, coming three minutes after the restart. Spring Arbor followed with its best chance two minutes later, as a shot hit off the crossbar. The Vikings countered, and held possession near the SAU box. Eventually, Sophomore Midfielder Fabiana Vasquez (Isla Margarita, Venezuela) set up Senior Midfielder Judit Ferre (Barcelona, Spain) at the top of the box. The shot from Ferre was deflected and went into goal to put MVC in front, 1-0, with seven minutes played in the half. The Cougars took advantage of an errant pass by Missouri Valley in its box, and earned a penalty kick near the 58-minute mark. Spring Arbor scored on its PK and tied the contest at 1-1. The Vikings tried to find a late winner, which included a shot saved from Carrasco Mesa with less than 15-minutes remaining. Three minutes later, a shot from Senior Defender Ana Rendon (Medellin, Colombia) hit off the post, and Ferre had a shot saved close to the 80-minute mark. Both teams were unable to score a late goal, and regulation ended at a 1-1 score.
The overtime period began with Missouri Valley taking possession, and sending a long pass towards the SAU box. Senior Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.) collected the pass, and found Flores going towards the Cougar goal. Flores put a shot from 12-yards out past the keeper for a golden-goal winner to give the Vikings a 2-1 victory.
Flores scored her sixth goal of the season, and her first game-winning goal. Ferre added goal No. 12 this season. Arribas recorded her fourth assists and Vasquez now has three assists. Missouri Valley held a 15-2 advantage in shots, and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
