No. 6 Women's Soccer Defeats William Penn on the Road
Oskaloosa, Iowa, (Oct. 11, 2025)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's soccer teams traveled to Oskaloosa, Iowa, for a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader with William Penn (Iowa), Saturday afternoon. The women's team scored a pair of goals to secure a 2-0 win. The men's team scored an early goal in the second half and earned a road upset win over #7 William Penn, 1-0.
Play in the women's game started with Missouri Valley creating the first opportunity in the opening moments, as Senior Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.) had a shot that was blocked. Teams traded possession over the next stretch of play, and near the 15-minute mark William Penn had the first chance on goal, forcing Senior Goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujalance (Cornella Llobregat, Spain) into a save. The Vikings had a better possession through the next several minutes, as both Senior Midfielder Carla Carmona (Barcelona, Spain) and Senior Midfielder Madi Hudson (Sandbach, England) each had a shot that went high. With 13-minutes left to play in the half, Senior Defender Marta Carrasco Mesa (Sevilla, Spain) scored a goal from near 40-yards out to put MVC in front, 1-0. Missouri Valley had a shot on target from Senior Defender Zoe Christofaro (Tucson, Ariz.) four minutes later but it was saved. The Statesmen had the last chance of the half, as they hit the post near the 42-minute mark but the Vikings went into halftime on top, 1-0.
The second half opened with early offensive pressure from Missouri Valley, as Senior Defender Daijah White (Tucson, Ariz.) had a shot on goal just over five minutes after the restart, but was saved by the WPU keeper. The two teams traded possession through the next ten minutes, until Senior Forward Marlene Flores (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) set up Arribas with a goal from outside the box near the 62-minute mark to extend the lead, 2-0. With nearly 25-minutes played into the half, the Vikings had back-to-back corner kicks, however both teams struggled to create chances through the rest of the game, and Missouri Valley closed out a shutout victory, 2-0.
Both Carrasco Mesa and Arribas finished with one goal each. Carrasco Mesa has three goals on the season, while Arribas now has five goals. Flores registered her fourth assist. Barbara Bujalance made one save in goal. The Vikings led 10-5 in total shots, and held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Missouri Valley improves to 9-0-3 on the season and 7-0-1 in the Heart. William Penn drops to 2-9-1 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
Up next, the Viking soccer teams will host MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) in a Heart doubleheader, Wednesday. The women's game starts at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
