No. 9 Women's Soccer Holds Off Dordt For Win at Home
Marshall, Mo., (Sept. 6, 2025)- The No. 9 Missouri Valley College women's soccer team hosted Dordt (Iowa) in a non-conference contest Saturday inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium. The Vikings scored a goal in each half, and held off Dordt late to earn a 2-1 victory.
Missouri Valley produced the better of chances at the start of the game, putting five shots on goal through the midway point of the first half. Senior Forward Marlene Flores (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) had a shot saved with just over 13-minutes played, and Senior Midfielder Carla Carmona (Barcelona, Spain) forced the Dordt keeper into a save five minutes later. Two chances came near the 20-minute mark, as a header from Senior Defender Marta Carrasco Mesa (Sevilla, Spain) was saved off the goal line, and a rebound attempt from Flores was saved by the Defender keeper moments later. Senior Midfielder Madi Hudson (Sandbach, England) also had a shot saved two minutes later, as the game stayed scoreless. Junior Goalkeeper Lola Martinez Benitez (Madrid, Spain) was tested for the first time midway through the half, and came up with a save. The Vikings continued to pressure Dordt, as Senior Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.) had two shots saved, while Flores and Carrasco also had shots kept out of goal over the next stretch. After another Arribas shot was saved near the 32-minute mark, MVC continued to pressure, and eventually led to a long-range shot from Senior Defender Zoe Christofaro (Tucson, Ariz.), coming nearly 25 yards from goal. The attempt sailed over the Dordt keeper's head, and into the net for the first goal of the game, to give MVC a 1-0 lead with less than 12-minutes remaining in the half. The two teams traded possession through the rest of play before halftime, and Missouri Valley held the one-goal advantage.
The second half began with both teams creating chances early. Dordt had the first opportunity, with nine minutes played after the restart, leading to another save from Martinez Benitez. Just over one minute later, Senior Forward Viktoria Einsbor (Havdrip, Denmark) had a shot saved, while Martinez Benitez made another save near the 58-minute mark. The Defenders kept up pressure, and eventually tied the contest at 1-1 with 21-minutes off the clock. Missouri Valley responded and gained possession deep in Dordt territory. Senior Midfielder Judit Ferre (Barcelona, Spain) collected the ball, and sent a shot inside the DU box into goal to put the Vikings back in front, midway through the half. Senior Forward Silvia Maldonado (Madrid, Spain) came close to extending the lead, as a shot hit off the crossbar with less than 12-minutes remaining in the game. Missouri Valley was awarded a penalty kick in the final minutes, but the attempt from Carmona was saved, and MVC held the one-goal lead with three minutes to play. Dordt came close to an equalizer late, as a breakaway opportunity led to another save from Marintez Benitez with one minute on the clock. The Vikings eventually sealed the 2-1 win.
Christofaro recorded her second goal of the season, and Ferre now has two goals and one-game winning goal. Senior Defender Ana Rendon (Medellin, Colombia) added one assist. Martinez Benitez made four saves in goal. Missouri Valley held a 23-8 advantage in shots, and created six corner kicks.
The win moves the Vikings to 2-0-2 on the season, while Dordt falls to 1-3-1.
Up next, Missouri Valley opens play in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, hosting Benedictine (Kan.) in a doubleheader, Tuesday. Women's game starts at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m., inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.
