No. 12 Women's Soccer Holds Off No. 16 Oklahoma Wesleyan in Home Win
Marshall, Mo., (Aug. 30, 2025)- The No. 12 Missouri Valley College women's soccer team hosted No. 16 Oklahoma Wesleyan in a non-conference contest Saturday inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium. An early goal and a late save preserved a 1-0 victory for the Vikings.
Missouri Valley started the game with the better of possession in the opening minutes. The first attempt on goal came with just over one minute played as a header from Senior Forward Silvia Maldonado (Madrid, Spain) was saved. A little more than two minutes later, Maldonado had another quality attempt, set up by Senior Forward Ashley Arribas (Lake Forest, Calif.), and scored on the chance to give MVC a 1-0 lead. The two teams traded possession over the next stretch of play, and both struggled to produce anything on goal until near the 33-minute mark. Senior Goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujalance (Cornella Llobregat, Spain) came up with the first save of the contest, then needed to make a save in the final moments of the half to send the Vikings into the break on top by a 1-0 score.
Play in the second half began with an early chance created by MVC, as a shot from Senior Defender Daijah White (Tucson, Ariz.) was saved with just over six minutes off the clock. The two teams traded opportunities on goal later in the half, as Senior Defender Ana Rendon (Medellin, Colombia) had a shot saved near the 63-minute mark, and Barbara Bujalance made another save less than three minutes later. With less than 19-minutes to play in the contest, Senior Forward Marlene Flores (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) tested the OKWU keeper, but the attempt was saved. Oklahoma Wesleyan came close to tying the score, as a shot hit off the post with nearly 10-minutes remaining. As time was winding down in the game, OKWU had one more shot, taken from outside the box, but Barbara Bujalance saved the attempt, and pushed the ball above the crossbar and out of play to preserve the 1-0 win.
Maldonado had the game-winning goal and Arribas added one assist. Barbara Bujalance recorded the first shutout of the season with four saves. Missouri Valley held a 9-7 advantage in shots and produced three corner kicks.
The win moves Missouri Valley to 1-0-1 on the season, while Oklahoma Wesleyan drops to 1-1.
Up next, the Viking women's soccer team plays a third-straight Nationally ranked opponent to begin the season, hosting No. 4 Columbia (Mo.), Tuesday at 7 p.m., inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.
