Women's Basketball Drops Game to Columbia at Atrium Classic

Canton, Mo., (Nov. 4, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College women's basketball team played a second game at the Atrium Classic in Canton, Mo., Saturday evening.  The team met Columbia (Mo.), but dropped the contest to finish with a 1-1 record at the event.

 

Missouri Valley fell into an early deficit at the start of the game, as Columbia went in front, 7-0 with three minutes played in the contest.  The opening field goal of the game came from Junior Giavanna Moore (Independence, Mo.), but the Cougars extended their advantage to 11-2 midway through the quarter before another Moore basket.  Missouri Valley trailed by double-digits at 16-4, while Junior Maddie Ferrara (Hendersonville, Tenn.) added a pair of free throws, with Moore sinking a jump shot to put the deficit at 18-8 near the two-minute mark.  Columbia gradually added to its advantage in the final stretch of play, staying on top, 27-12 going into the second quarter.

 

The first field goal of the second quarter for Missouri Valley came from Ferrara nearly two minutes into play, but the team would go another four minutes without another made basket.  Sophomore Sophie Sullivan (Lombard, Ill.) ended the drought with a layup at the four-minute mark, as the gap grew to 40-17.  The Vikings eventually went into halftime trailing, 53-19.

 

Missouri Valley was unable to work back into the game in the second half, and were outscored by a 41-22 margin in the final two quarters before falling by a final score of 94-41.

 

Moore led with 13 points, and added three rebounds.  Sullivan had five points and five rebounds.  

 

The loss drops Missouri Valley to 1-1 on the season, while Columbia moves to 3-0.

 

Up next, the Vikings will host Southwestern (Kan.) in a non-conference game, Friday at 5:30 p.m., inside the Burns Athletic Complex for the first home game of the season.
