Softball Splits Road Doubleheader at William Penn
Oskaloosa, Iowa, (April 10, 2026)- The Missouri Valley College softball team traveled to Oskaloosa, Iowa for a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader against William Penn (Iowa), Friday evening. The Vikings fell in the opener, but followed with a 3-2 win in game two with a complete-game pitching performance.
Game two began with the two teams held scoreless through the opening two innings. William Penn threatened in the bottom of the first inning, moving a runner to third base, but Junior Pitcher Chloe Shuff (Cypress, Calif.) got out of the inning with the runner stranded. Shuff then faced the minimum in the bottom of the second inning, inducing three ground outs. The first hit of the game for Missouri Valley came in the top of the third as Junior Catcher Camryn Dilla (West Des Moines, Iowa) belted out a solo homer to put the team in front. Senior Rightfielder Bryn Grandon (Paola, Kan.) followed with a double and Sophomore Second Baseman Allison Loucas (Twin Lakes, Wisc.) singled later in the inning, but the two were left on-base to end the threat. William Penn opened the bottom half of the inning with a double, which was followed by three-straight grounders to end the inning and keep MVC in front, 1-0. The bottom of the fourth featured another threat from WPU, using a double and a single to put two runners on-base with one out. Shuff got out of the jam without surrendering a run and leaving those two runners stranded. Missouri Valley was taken down in order in the top of the fifth, and William Penn scored its first run of the game in the bottom half, using a solo homerun to tie the teams at 1-1. The Vikings responded in the top of the sixth, which started on a single from Senior Centerfielder Jesykah Foster (Garden City, Kan.). Foster was able to reach third on a sac-bunt attempt from Loucas, then scored on a grounder hit by Freshman First Baseman Gabriella White (Pittsburg, Kan.) to send the team back in front, 2-1. Shuff worked through the WPU in order in the bottom of the sixth, sending the game into the seventh inning. Missouri Valley opened its at-bat with a solo homer from Sophomore Third Baseman Keira Carvalho (Vista, Calif.) to stretch the advantage out to 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. William Penn tried to mount a rally, and used a walk, single and a wild pitch to put two runners into scoring position with one out. A sac-fly brought home one run to cut into the MVC lead, but a grounder hit to Carvalho at third resulted in the final out of the game, and secured the 3-2 win for Missouri Valley.
Both Carvalho and Dilla had one hit, one run and one RBI, both hitting solo homers. Foster added one hit and one run scored. Shuff pitched a complete-game, giving up six hits and two earned runs with one strikeout.
The Vikings fell behind early in game two, as William Penn scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second inning, WPU added another four runs in the third, then put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Missouri Valley fell by a final score of 12-0. Foster and Senior Leftfielder Taya Brickner (Fort Collins, Colo.) each had one hit.
Missouri Valley moves to 6-30 overall and 3-15 in the Heart. William Penn sits at 19-17 on the season and 10-8 in the conference.
