No. 13 Men's Wrestling Opens Home Invitational, Heads into Day Two in the Top of the Standings

Marshall, Mo., (Jan. 23, 2026)- The No. 13 Missouri Valley College men's wrestling team opened one of the largest collegiate men's wrestling tournaments in the country with day one of the Missouri Valley Invitational, Friday inside the Burns Athletic Complex.  The event features nearly 50 NAIA programs, with 450 individual wrestlers.  Seven Vikings advanced to day two of the tournament, with five wrestlers in the semifinals. As a team, MVC is tied for first place in the standings with 83 points.

No. 16 Junior Robert Albert (Cape Coral, Fla.)-125 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Sam Gosnell of Montreat (N.C.) in a 17-2 technical fall.

Third Round: Defeated No. 21 Connor Hueck of St. Thomas (Fla.) in a 7-3 decision.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 4 Brody Gee of St. Mary (Kan.) in a first period (1:05) pin.

 

No. 3 Junior Haden Hernandez (Huntington Beach, Calif.)-125 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Gentry Walston of William Penn (Iowa) in a 17-0 technical fall.

Third Round: Defeated Aidan Rodriguez of Hastings (Neb.) in an 11-0 major decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Patrick Jones of Keiser (Fla.) in a 1-0 decision.

 

No. 12 Freshman Aiden Serrano (Indianola, Iowa)-133 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Zeke Wheeler of Oklahoma Wesleyan in a second period (4:29) pin.

Second Round: Defeated Jeffery Myers of William Penn (Iowa) in a 6-2 decision.

Third Round: Lost to Braden Wedenhausen of William Woods (Mo.) in an 18-0 technical fall.

Consolation Fourth Round: Lost to Kolten Powers of Montana State-Northern in a first period (2:49) pin.

 

No. 15 Freshman Tuvshinjargal Zuunbayan-133 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Avelino Mota of Missouri Baptist in a 16-1 technical fall.

Third Round: Defeated Leland Reeves of Georgetown (Ky.) in a 7-6 decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Braden Carson of Eastern Oregon in a 3-2 decision.

 

Freshman Thailyn Reynolds (Wasilla, Alaska)-149 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Jesse Anson of Providence (Mont.) in a third period (6:19) pin.

Second Round: Lost to Dru Thomas of Avila (Mo.) in a 5-4 decision.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Zion Amerson of Midland (Neb.) in a 19-4 technical fall.

Consolation Third Round: Lost to Georgino Moraga of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a 5-0 decision.

 

Junior Kristofer Arrey (Riverside, Calif.)-149 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Donte Lopez of Oklahoma Wesleyan in a 2-0 decision.

Third Round: Defeated Cole Cross of Eastern Oregon in a 4-0 decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Rico Robles of Arizona Christian in a 16-5 major decision.

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Lost to Cale Hein of Ottawa (Kan.) in a third period (5:31) pin.

Consolation Third Round: Lost to Jordan Tobias of Hastings (Neb.) in a 16-1 technical fall.

Third Round: Defeated Drew Trigg of Indiana Tech in a first period (1:29) pin.

Quarterfinal: Defeated No. 17 Kevin Olavarria of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 13-8 decision.

 

Freshman Luke Sarich (Weiser, Idaho)-184 pounds:

First Round: Lost to Bronson Swan of Arizona Christian in a 13-10 decision.

Consolation First Round: Defeated Spencer Fields of Truett-McConnell (Ga.) in a first period (0:34) pin.

Consolation Second Round: Lost to Tyler Hanna of Southeastern (Fla.) in a second period (3:36) pin.

 

No. 3 Senior Elijah Hynes (Broken Arrow, Okla.)-197 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Aidym Merchant of William Woods (Mo.) in a 15-0 technical fall.

Third Round: Defeated Joel Arias of Northwestern (Iowa) in a 20-4 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 21 Gabe Chesbro of St. Mary (Kan.) by medical forfeit.

 

Junior Abe Preston (Wetumpka, Ala.)-285 pounds:

First Round: Lost to No. 21 Daguy Massillon of Keiser (Fla.) in a 4-2 decision.

Consolation First Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Second Round: Lost to Johnatan Argueta of Montreat (N.C.) in a 3-1 decision.

 

No. 16 Senior Randy Gonzalez (Lakewood, Calif.)-285 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Defeated Ja`quavian Daniels of Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in a second period (4:13) pin.

Third Round: Defeated Amad Soufi of Missouri Baptist in a 4-1 decision.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Devon Lolar of St. Mary (Kan.) in a 6-0 decision.

 

As a team, the Vikings enter day two tied for first place in the standings with No. 3 Southeastern (Fla.), both with 83 points.  No. 14 Central Methodist (Mo.) in third place with 81 points, followed by No. 22 Concordia (Neb.) with 80.5 points, and fifth is No. 17 Marian (Ind.) with 80 points.
