Men's Wrestling Places Second, One Individual Champion, Seven National Qualifiers at Heart Championship

Oskaloosa, Iowa, (Feb. 22, 2025)- The No. 15 Missouri Valley College men's wrestling team competed at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship in Oskaloosa, Iowa.  Seven individuals earned automatic qualifying into the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship, and one Viking earned an individual conference title.

 

No. 11 Sophomore Haden Hernandez (Huntington Beach, Calif.)-133 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Nick Foster of Graceland (Iowa) in a 19-2 technical fall.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 20 Lane Scorpil of William Penn (Iowa) in a 16-10 decision.

Championship Match: Defeated No. 23 Christian Nishi-Rivera of Baker (Kan.) in a 5-3 decision.

Hernandez is the 133lb champion and an automatic qualifier into the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 16 Sophomore Kristofer Arrey (Riverside, Calif.)-149 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Mason Scholtz of Benedictine (Kan.) in a first period (1:21) pin.

Second Round: Defeated Tate O'Shea of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a 16-0 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Caleb Nielsen of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a third period (6:29) pin.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 1 Darnai Heard of Grand View (Iowa) in an 11-8 sudden-victory decision.

Championship Match:  Lost to No. 8 Elijah Larsen of Grand View (Iowa) in a 17-2 technical fall.

Arrey placed second and is an automatic qualifier into the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

Freshman Brayden Shelton (Centralia, Mo.)-157 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Joe Insalaco of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 15-0 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Jakob Stovall of Baker (Kan.) in a 5-0 decision.

Semifinal: Defeated No. 24 Diego Machado of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a second period (3:26) pin.

Championship Match: Lost to No. 2 Donald Griffin of Central Methodist (Mo.) in an 11-8 sudden-victory decision.

Shelton placed second and is an automatic qualifier into the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 22 Senior Donavan Parn (Brookfield, Mo.)-141 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Coulter Rieschick of Benedictine (Kan.) in a first period (1:34) pin.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Carson Jensen of William Penn (Iowa) in a 17-1 technical fall.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 10 Edrich Nortje of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 7-4 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Guiseppe Guerra of St. Ambrose in a 12-5 decision.

Third Place Match: Defeated Kavika Aholelei of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 4-1 decision.

Parn placed third and is an automatic qualifier into the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 4 Junior Francis Morrissey (Warner Robins, Ga.)-174 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Isaac Kauffman of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 15-0 technical fall.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Anthony Sartori of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in an 18-3 technical fall.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 11 Roman Garcia of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 6-1 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Kenal Pugh of William Penn (Iowa) in a 10-6 decision.

Third Place Match: Defeated Christion Griggs of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 17-4 major decision.

Morrissey placed third and is an automatic qualifier into the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

No. 3 Junior Elijah Hynes (Broken Arrow, Okla.)-197 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Braden Thompson of Baker (Kan.) in a first period (1:37) pin.

Quarterfinal: Defeated Jacob Ruff of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a first period (2:06) pin.

Semifinal: Lost to Trayvonne Jackson of Grand View (Iowa) in a 4-3 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated Doug Blaha of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 5-3 decision.

Third Place Match: Defeated No. 25 John Schuttler of Graceland (Iowa) in an 11-4 decision.

Hynes placed third and is an automatic qualifier into the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

Sophomore Robert Albert (Cape Coral, Fla.)-125 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Lost to No. 20 Saoul Prado of Baker (Kan.) in a 2-1 decision.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Gentry Walston of William Penn (Iowa) in a 17-1 technical fall.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated Jacob Campbell of Benedictine (Kan.) in a 7-0 decision.

Consolation Semifinal: Defeated No. 21 Clemente Delgado of Graceland (Iowa) in an 8-2 decision.

Third Place Match: Lost to No. 14 Jose Gonzalez of Dickinson State (N.D.) in an 11-6 decision

Albert placed fourth and is an automatic qualifier into the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship.

 

Senior Bryson Anderson (Orting, Wash.)-149 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Second Round: Lost to Nevertesonne Lahens of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 5-1 decision.

Consolation Second Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Third Round: Lost to Joshua Zeman of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a third period (6:17) pin.

 

No. 19 Senior Brenden Parks (Crystal Lake, Ill.)-165 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Defeated No. 22 Juan Lopez of Graceland (Iowa) in an 18-13 decision.

Semifinal: Lost to No. 3 Cam Robinson of Grand View (Iowa) in a 19-4 technical fall.

Consolation Semifinal: Lost to Jayden Terronez of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a 12-7 decision.

Fifth Place Match: Lost to No. 22 Juan Lopez of Graceland (Iowa) in a third period (5:46) pin.

 

Senior Drake Tipton (Grain Valley, Mo.)-184 pounds:

First Round: Lost to Jack Simons of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 5-0 decision.

Consolation First Round: Received a bye.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Trey Duhon of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a 3-1 decision.

Consolation Third Round: Lost to No. 10 KJ Fry of Graceland (Iowa) in a 15-0 technical fall.

Seventh Place Match: Lost to Jack Simons of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a 10-1 major decision.

 

Sophomore Jayden Joseph (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)-285 pounds:

First Round: Received a bye.

Quarterfinal: Lost to Tyler Casey of St. Ambrose (Iowa) in a 7-2 decision.

Consolation Second Round: Received a bye:

Consolation Third Round: Lost to teammate No. 18 Randy Gonzalez in a 5-3 decision.

Seventh Place Match: Lost to Jesse Schwery of William Penn (Iowa) in a 5-3 decision.

 

No. 18 Junior Randy Gonzalez (Lakewood, Calif.)-285 pounds:

First Round: Defeated Elijah Eslinger of Baker (Kan.) in a first period (1:08) pin.

Quarterfinal: Lost to Kazz Hyson of Graceland (Iowa) in a second period (4:05) pin.

Consolation Second Round: Defeated Mason Harris of Benedictine (Kan.) in a first period (2:35) pin.

Consolation Third Round: Defeated teammate Jayden Joseph in a 5-3 decision.

Consolation Semifinals: Lost to No. 6 Austin Foye of Central Methodist (Mo.) in a third period (7:50) pin.

Fifth Place Match: Defeated Kazz Hyson of Graceland (Iowa) in a 3-0 decision.

 

As a team, Missouri Valley finished second in the standings, with 148.5 total points.  No. 1 Grand View (Iowa) won the team title with 239.5 points.  Dickinson State (N.D.) was third with 138.5 points.

 

The seven automatic qualifiers will next compete at the 2025 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championship, set for March 6-8 in Park City, Kan.  An additional 30 at-large spots will be announced by the NAIA Tuesday.
