Bio

Jianping Ma became the Director of Lifting Sports/Head Lifting Coach in the summer of 2023.  Ma is one of the most accomplished lifting coaches in the world, and will be taking over the weightlifting and Olympic lifting programs for the athletic department.  Ma is a certified weightlifting coach and was an Olympian for China in 1984. He has coached the USA University National Team, Team Anhui China, and Team Seychelles producing multiple individual champions and medalists on the world stage.  He is the founder and director of Ma Weightlifting.

As a competitor, Ma was a member of the Chinese National team in weightlifting with 45 years experience in Chinese weightlifting.  He represented China at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the 67.5kg weight class.  He won a silver medal and two bronze medals in four World Championships and World Cup appearances, and was a 12-time National champion in China.  Ma is a four-time masters world champion and current world record holder.
