No. 10 Men's Soccer Uses Late Goal to Top No. 20 MidAmerica Nazarene

Olathe, Kan., (Oct. 2, 2024)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's soccer teams traveled to Olathe, Kan., for a Wednesday afternoon heart of America Athletic Conference Nationally ranked doubleheader against MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.).The No. 10 men's team used a late goal to finish a 2-1 victory over the No. 20 Pioneers.

 

The men's game started with an early goal scored by Missouri Valley.  Senior Forward Sam Green (London, England) sent a corner kick towards the MNU goal, and Senior Defender Kazuki Hashimoto (Yokohama, Japan) put his header into the net to send the VIking on top, 1-0, with less than four minutes played.  MidAmerica Nazarene had the better of opportunities over the next stretch, forcing Junior Goalkeeper Cristobal Benitez Delgado (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) into a pair of saves.  The two teams traded possession through the midway point of the half, and the Pioneers eventually found an equalizing goal.  With just over 28-minutes played the score was tied at 1-1.  Benitez Delgado needed to make two more saves late in the first half to send the teams into the break tied at one goal apiece.

 

Play in the second half featured an early chance created by MNU, as Benitez Delgado made another save with just over six minutes played after the restart.  The first shot on goal for the Vikings in the second half came with less than 10 minutes to play in the contest, as a header from Senior Defender Jacob Adams (Nottingham, England) was saved.  Missouri Valley earned a free kick near the MNU box with less than minutes of the game, and a scrum in front of goal eventually led to a shot from Adams that got past the Pioneer keeper and into the net to put the Vikings in front once again.  MidAmerica Nazarene was unable to create a quality chance in the final moments, and Missouri Valley came away with a 2-1 win.

 

Hashimoto scored his second goal of the season, while Adams added his second goal, and second game-winning goal.  Green now has three assists and 21 total points on the season.  Benitez Delgado made seven saves in goal.  Missouri Valley got off a total of 11 shots, and earned five corner kicks.

 

Missouri Valley improves to 8-1-1 on the season and 5-0 in the conference.  MidAmerica Nazarene drops to 4-4-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the Heart.

 

Up next, the Viking soccer teams travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa, to play a Heart doubleheader against William Penn (Iowa).  The women's game starts at 11 a.m., followed by a game against the No. 6 Statesmen at 1:30 p.m., in the Heart Game of the Week.
