Men's Lacrosse Drops Home Contest to Clarke

Marshall, Mo., (March 27, 2025)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's lacrosse teams played a home doubleheader Thursday evening inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.  The women's team overcame a halftime deficit to pull away from Eastern Oregon in a 14-10 win.  The men's team fell to Clarke (Iowa) in a Heart of America Athletic Conference contest.

The men's game started with Clarke going in front early, scoring the opening goal with one minute played.  Senior Goalkeeper Jake Lipscomb (Boiling Springs, S.C.) came up with four saves over the next several minutes, while the Vikings tested the Pride keeper with shots from Senior Attacker Alvaro Atienza (Madrid, Spain), Freshman Midfielder Andrew Gongora (Corona, Calif.) and Freshman Midfielder Shiloh Martin (Upper Marlboro, Md.) over the stretch of play.  Clarke came through the game's next goal, extending its lead to 2-0 with just over four minutes to play in the quarter.  A little more than one minute later, CU added to its advantage, and went into the second quarter ahead, 3-0.

Missouri Valley cut into its deficit early in the second quarter, as a Clarke turnover led to a shot on goal from Freshman Defender Lucas Brena (Miami, Fla.).  The Pride increased its lead over the rest of the quarter scoring five-straight goals before going into halftime.  The Vikings trailed at the break, 8-1.

Play in the third quarter began with a pair of early saves by Lipscomb.  The second save led to an offensive possession for the Vikings, and ended on a goal from Atienza to cut the gap down to 8-2 with less than three minutes played after the restart. However, the Pride pulled away through the rest of the third and fourth quarters, as Missouri Valley fell, 14-2.

Lipscomb made 26 saves in goal.  Atienza and Brena each scored one goal for the Vikings.  Missouri Valley came up with 19 ground balls and forced Clarke into 13 turnovers.

The loss drops Missouri Valley to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the Heart.  Clarke improves to 3-4 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.

Up next, the Viking lacrosse teams travel to Fremont, Neb., Saturday for a Heart doubleheader with Midland (Neb.).  Women's game at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 4 p.m.
