Baseball Finishes Series at Park with Doubleheader

Parkville, Mo., (April 8, 2025)- The Missouri Valley College baseball team finished a Heart of America Athletic Conference series against Park (Mo.) with a Tuesday doubleheader in Parkville, Mo.  The Vikings fell in both games.

Playing as the home team on the scoreboard, game one started with Missouri Valley taking control early.  Sophomore Pitcher Trey Brakensiek (Wright City, Mo.) struck out one in the top of the first inning and stranded two Park runners on-base.  The Vikings followed with production from the plate in the bottom half of the inning as Junior Centerfielder Mason Mitchell (Littleton, Colo.) singled and Freshman Leftfielder Isaac Nieters (Hughesville, Mo.) walked.  The pair both stole one base to move into scoring position, and Mitchell came home on a Senior Third Baseman Connor Bell (San Diego, Calif.) grounder.  Later in the inning, Freshman Shortstop Sota Suzuki (Aichi, Japan) singled to drive home Nieters, and MVC sat on top, 2-0.  Brakensiek used a double-play, started by Senior Second Baseman Dale Bratz (Carstairs, Alberta), to keep the Pirates scoreless in the top of the second inning.  Missouri Valley followed with another pair of runs in the bottom half, as Mason singled with two outs, and Nieters knocked out a two-run homer to stretch the advantage out to 4-0.  Park responded with one run in the top of the third, then rallied for eight runs in the fourth to move ahead, 9-4.  The Vikings cut into their deficit in the bottom half of the inning, which included a two-run double from Nieters and a run-scoring grounder by Bratz to make it a 9-7 score.  The top of the fifth featured more offense from the Pirates, bringing home another six runs, followed by three more runs in the top of the sixth.  Junior Pinch Runner Jacob Spear (Oakwood, Ill.) scored the last MVC run, on a grounder from Bell, in the bottom of the sixth, and Missouri Valley eventually fell by a 20-8 final score.

Nieters led with two hits, three runs and four RBIs.  Mitchell added two hits and three runs scored, while Bratz and Suzuki each had one hit and one RBI.

In game two, Junior Designated Hitter Tanner Duncan (Kennett, Mo.) had two hits and one run scored, while Senior Third Baseman Jayden Mah (Nanaimo, British Columbia) had one hit and two RBIs.  Both Mitchell and Bell added one hit, one run and one RBI apiece.

Missouri Valley drops to 11-22 overall and 6-14 in the Heart.  Park improves to 19-10 on the season and 14-6 in the conference.

Up next, the Viking baseball team will travel to Fayette, Mo., for a Heart series against No. 21 Central Methodist (Mo.).  Doubleheaders will be played Saturday and Sunday, with 1 p.m. start times.
