Bio
The 1995 women’s track and field team was a pinnacle season in what was a stretch of success for the program during the 1990’s. Led by Head Coach Jake von Sherrer and assistant coaches Jan Murphy and Dixie Wescott, the 1995 team made an impact on the program and the Athletic Department that is still felt today. The team captured the Heart of America Athletic Conference outdoor championship, and set numerous school records, including seven that still stand. An indoor record includes Debbie (Cobbler) Jay’s 55 meter hurdles time of 8.23, along with her outdoor 110 meter hurdles record of 14.22. Rochelle Ward still holds the outdoor 400 meter hurdles record of 63.29, as does Becci Hunholz in the 1500 meter steeplechase with a time of 6:16.13. The record time for the outdoor 4x100 meter relay team of Alkie (Lewis) Ximinies, Rochelle Ward, Tachelle (Duke) Walton and Debbie (Cobbler) Jay still stands at 47.41, as does the distance medley relay team record of Johane Joseph, Angie Stanek, Elaine Meyer and Becci Hunholz at 14:17.62. Plus, the outdoor long jump record for Tachelle (Duke) Walton stands at 19 feet, 1 inch. Additionally, another five records were set during the 1996 season from those who were part of the 1995 team. Three members of the team earned All-American honors. Debbie (Cobbler) Jay and Tachelle (Duke) Walton were indoor All-Americans, and both Rochelle Ward and Debbie (Cobbler) Jay were outdoor All-Americans. Debbie (Cobbler) Jay became the first women’s track & field athlete to earn induction into the Missouri Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame, as part of the 2023 class.
Head Coach Jake von Sherrer reflected on this team as having great ability, but also with representing Missouri Valley College well during their travels, receiving compliments on the team’s respectful and friendly nature. He adds that it is not surprising this group eventually found great success as leaders, parents and professionals in many avenues, including careers in teaching, coaching, administration and business.
