No. 13 Men's Soccer Suffers Late Loss at Benedictine

Atchison, Kan., (Oct. 28, 2023)- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's soccer teams traveled to Atchison, Kan., to close out play in the Heart of America Athletic Conference with a doubleheader against Benedictine (Kan.).  In a Nationally ranked women's game, the No. 20 Vikings earned a 2-1 victory over the No. 24 Ravens.  The No. 13 men's team suffered a late 1-0 defeat.

The men's game started with both teams unable to create quality chances through the midway point of the first half.  The first shot on goal came just past the 23-minute mark, as Junior Midfielder Malik Hasanovikj (Skopje, North Macedonia) had a shot saved, followed by a shot from Senior Defender Kazuki Hashimoto (Yokohama, Japan) that was kept out of goal.  The Vikings held Benedictine to few chances, and no attempts on goal in the half, as the contest went into the break at 0-0.  Sophomore Goalkeeper Vicente Benitez Delgado (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) was called on quickly after the restart for a save, in just over one minute of play.  Missouri Valley could not create a chance on goal until the late stages of the contest, as a shot from Junior Forward Diego Blanco Alvarez (Oviedo, Spain) was saved with just over 10 minutes to play.  The Ravens worked a pair of chances in the closing minutes, the first shot was saved by Benitez Delgado, but the second attempt went into goal, and put BC in front, 1-0, with less than six minutes to play.  Missouri Valley could not create a late opportunity to tie the game, and the Vikings fell, 1-0.

Benitez Delgado made three saves.  Missouri Valley created five shots and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Missouri Valley drops to 10-5 on the season and 9-2 in the Heart after the loss.  Benedictine improves to 8-5-4 overall and 5-3-3 in the conference.

Up next, the Viking women's soccer team hosts No. 18 Oklahoma Wesleyan Tuesday at 4 p.m., inside Volney C. Ashford Stadium.  The men's team travels to Bartlesville, Okla., to play No. 8 Oklahoma Wesleyan, Tuesday at 5 p.m.
